Welcoming the New Year with the Haven Community Hub

As the New Year approaches, many of us are thinking about New Year’s resolutions and the desire to welcome to the New Year with a healthy body and mind.

The most common resolutions are to exercise more, lose weight, learn a new skill and live life to the fullest…well, attending the Haven Community Hub can meet all of these needs.

In particular, we make it our mission to address the importance of exercise and regular physical activity, especially in later life. That’s why, we have something to suit everyone at the Hub with a wide range of exercise classes.

Sandra is a regular user of the Haven Community Hub, she said, “[The Hub is] A wonderful recreational area, facilities and classes has made such a difference to me because I was dealing with mental health problems and anxiety. Its friendly and welcoming, I look forward to coming and am in awe of how well it is organised. It is a home from home and a blessing to the community.”

Here are just some of the benefits of physical activity:

  • Helps you to maintain a healthy weight
  • Reduce your risk of falls by strengthening your muscles
  • It is linked to supporting your thinking skills
  • Boost your mood and energy levels(exercise releases endorphins)
  • It’s social – joining a sports team or a class can help you to make friends

If you haven’t exercised in a while, don’t worry. We have classes suitable for beginners and we can help advise which classes are best for you. We also have classes that focus on gentle exercise to help you to regain your fitness at your own pace. If you’re used to regular physical activity, exercises can be tailored to be more strenuous.

Dee, regular user of the Hub said, “Everyone at The Hub is awesome. It is like a second home. People there are brilliant and caring.”

Example of classes held at the Hub:

  • Body and brain exercise
  • Seated exercise
  • Yoga
  • Viking Pilates
  • Qigong
  • Ballroom and Latin Dance Class
  • Dementia Friendly classes

Liam is an instructor at the Haven Community Hub, he runs a number of popular classes and has been working with Age Concern Southend for 6 years. He said, “We have classes for a range of abilities, and everyone is welcome. I am more than happy to talk to people if they have any concern ahead of a class. Keeping our body active is a valuable part of any overall body wellness plan.”

“I’ve loved working with Age Concern Southend within the Haven Community Hub. I shared a story on my Instagram recently of a gentleman in his 90s with Dementia who attends my body and brain exercise class and interestingly, double stick drills seem to kick start something in his memory and he begins retelling stories from his youth. It’s amazing and so rewarding to see.”
